I like the forest. I visit as often as I can. I practically live there. I love the questions it generates. They are these wonderful discoveries full of power, full of potential. What a nicely colored blossom I discovered on the forest floor next to that old gnarled tree. Surely you love me Jehovah Jireh, leaving these here for me. What treasures! I will put them in my basket. My basket is constantly on my arm ready to hold new discoveries, epiphanies, insights, or demanding ideas. I am proud of my collection. I like the fact that I can recognize that my forest findings are tailor-made for me. They all resonate.
Once in a while I will bring out my basket for show and tell. See this thorn; its sharp point holds the key to unlocking a great new path for me. How blessed I am to be brave enough to pluck it off its bush.
Several years ago after generously sharing my discoveries with a few chosen friends, I was asked the question, “how?”
How have you incorporated these things into your life?
Hmmm.
It’s a great collection he noted. But, “how?”
Hmmm, again.
That is a great question. I love that question! It really resonates. I see that I collect many marvels and the collection has become the prize. I’m so proud that I can recognize that I needed that question. I put it in my basket.
Naturally I went out foresting again, finding finds. But lo!
Now How was attaching itself to everything. It had to be dealt with.
I had to take everything out one by one and respond to How. How seemed satisfied. I experienced the searing joy of actually using some of the items in my basket. Items not just for holding on my arm hoping that osmosis through simple possession would suffice. Of course, having the basket on my person did have some effect. Unusual colors, unfamiliar smells and enticing sounds did not go unnoticed. They did manage most of the time to penetrate and make some difference. However there is nothing like consciously paying attention, examining and looking for my reflection, letting it interrupt.
Oh look, that’s an interesting bird. It keeps following me. Every time I sigh over my workload, that obstacle ridden relationship, that financial deficit, that oh-so-near shaky future, it flies right in my face. Annoying. I suppose it wants me to take a hold of its wings to fly me to – where? What’s that song you are singing? Acceptance you warble? Surrender you say? Peace is it?
Just get in my basket! Of course How appears. Attached to How is her favorite companion, When.

Beautiful. A timely challenge for my life to go beyond the collecting of the beautiful and on to meaningful incorporation into my life. Thank you, friend!

What a great collection of thoughts. I need to take hold of that annoying bird to fly me to surrender and peace.
